A tree trunk protector is typically used to attach a winch rope to a tree. For this purpose, the strap is placed around the tree and both loops are hooked into the winch rope. Of course, the tree trunk protector can also be used as a recovery strap for towing or extrication. The term "Baumankergurt", or "Tree Trunk Protector" in English, merely refers to the length of the strap and its usual intended use. Under no circumstances should the rope of a winch be placed directly around the tree and hooked back into itself. A steel cable would cut into the tree, and the rope would kink and be damaged at the hook. Even with a synthetic rope, the kink at the hook would lead to a significant reduction in breaking strength. Abrasion against the tree during tensioning could damage individual fibers of the synthetic rope. T-MAX tree trunk protectors are made of nylon. The two ends are folded, reinforced, and protected with an additional cover. A sliding sleeve serves as additional protection and should be positioned against the tree trunk. Depending on the size of the rope hook, it is often easier, especially with ATV winches, to securely attach the tree trunk protector to the hook using an additional shackle.
